The experiences I had growing up in a bicultural family fuel the imagery, and emotional quality of my work. My father is an immigrant from Mexico, and my mother a white American. Overtime, I learned to perceive cultural dichotomies and accommodate conflicting perspectives. The deconstruction of my identity is at the root of what I paint and how I paint. I often draw on reference material of family and friends to convey a relativistic perception of the people in my life. The physical likeness and emotional temperament in each painting is articulated to suggest a struggle between the visceral and rational. Working in layers, I use tape to mask areas of the image and build up layers of paint that juxtapose realistic and abstract qualities. Recently, I began to incorporate Spanish and English words within the layers of paint. |
